Top 10 moving tips for seniors
10. Start Early
Begin planning as far in advance as possible for the move as it will make the moving and downsizing process significantly less overwhelming.
9. Defeat your Inner Pack Rat!
In most cases, you will not be able to take all of your belongings to your new home. Begin sorting through your belongings and decide which items you do not want anymore. You can do a number of things with these items such as give them as gifts to friends/family, host a garage sale or donate them to a favorite charity or thrift shop.
8. Give the Gift of Knowledge
Books are difficult to move as they are heavy and take up a lot of space. Set aside your favorite novels (or novels with monetary value) for you to keep. Then contact your local library, used book store or Good Will store and inquire if they accept used book donations.
7. Waste Removal...It's A Dirty Job...
Speak to your building management or town official to determine guidelines for trash removal. Ask what days of the week you are permitted to discard large items such as furniture and inquire what items (if any) they will not remove.
6. Take Measure and Compare
Take detailed measurements of the furniture you wish to bring with you to your new home. Lay out your furniture measurements against your new floor plan to determine what furniture will fit comfortably in the new space. This exercise will help you assess the furniture pieces you plan to pack.
5. Change of Address
Stop by your local Post Office or go on-line to www.usps.com and fill out a change of address form a few weeks prior to your move-in date. You may also consider having announcement cards printed up with your new address to mail out to family and friends.
4. Create an Inventory
While packing, create an inventory by box of all belongings you are bringing to your new home. This will help you stay organized while unpacking and ensure nothing gets lost or stolen during the move.
3. Services and Utilities
Keep a list of all of your service and utility providers easily accessible the week you plan to move. This will make the task of shutting them off/transferring them much simpler.
2. Pack an Over-Night bag (or box) with "Necessities"
Pack a bag of the items you feel are necessary to have immediately accessible at your new home. Consider including a change of clothes, a telephone, snacks, towels, toiletries, cosmetics, soap and trash bags. Keep this bag with you instead of on the moving truck.
